So Friday I had a very productive meeting with my mentor, we got to talk more about my project and we found out (thru a mentor meeting question) that I was supposed to be doing field work :/ major oops !
I felt super bad I hadn’t been doing any field work, because it´s actually what is going to give a closer approach to my project… architecture… so, my mentor Mrs. Fernandez gave me the phone of one of her friends that happens to be an architect and we made an appointment for a meeting… I interviewed her. We spent 2 hours in Starbucks talking about all the branches in architecture and her experience and all the different things an architect does… and now I know how the life of an architect is, because one told me about it . THAT was cool . I am definitely going to try and find more architects to interview and maybe go see them in action :P
Who knows…
I really liked how the life of an architect sounds like. It definitely does not sound chill, it keeps you constantly active and with a creative mind. The lady I interviewed, Carmen, was an architect in Venezuela and now works with Gamma USA, Windows and Walls develops, who manufactures and installs architectural aluminum products for both the commercial and institutional sectors — fixed and operable windows, curtain walls, doors, panels, coverings and cladding always striving to adapt to new trends and ever-changing market needs.
One of the projects they have as of today are: sky scrapers in New York City and the remodeling of the Miami Airport.
During the interview I brought up environmental architecture, to see what an architect thinks about it and she says that right now every architectural company is trying to focus on making their buildings/houses etc. environmental friendly because by making them with those characteristics the building is more efficient for the buyer because this way they won´t have to lose money in big ac bills etc. But she did say that it is still not very popular in the market because it is not the usual building strategy… and it is more expensive to buy ( although in the long term it is less expensive to maintain) . She gave me an example: “ok, so when you go to Publix and you want to buy either a coke or a bottled water … which one will be more expensive? in your mind it might be the coke because it has more ingredients to it , sugar, water, artificial bla bla bla… and water … is JUST water. But water is more expensive than the coke because the product is offering something that is good for you even though it is less processed and doesn’t contain so many ingredients.
Yeah… Im liking architecture and my urge to find out what I need to make architecture environmental friendly is growing every day :P
Good night people !
